RACE DETAILS & ROUTES

Some 500-1,000 runners and walkers will lace up their sneakers, snap on their dog leashes or don their costumes on Saturday March 13 and set forth to complete The Marine Mammal Center’s 26th “Run for the Seals” race - a fun, community event located within the scenic Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Sausalito, CA.

This year, there are two routes for you to choose from - we hope this gives people of all levels the chance to take part and enjoy the differing challenges of each course while soaking up the beautiful scenery and helping a worthwhile cause!

4-mile race:

Start on Mitchell Road, west of the fire station, continue straight and on to Bunker Road (tarmac road), passing the reservoir on your right, and go across the bridge. Take a right on Field Road after the bridge and take a sharp right on to Simmonds Road after 1/4 mile (max). Continue on Simmonds Road until it loops around to meet Bunker Road after about 3/4 mile. Continue on Bunker Road for another 1/4 mile, then loop back across a rough track area to rejoin Bunker Road heading west. Continue on Bunker Road, go back across the bridge over the reservoir, passing the reservoir on your left and back uphill on Bunker Road taking the right fork towards The Marine Mammal Center.

2-mile route:

Starting just after the 4-mile race at the same location on Mitchell Road, turn left, go north on the road after the fire station and walk west back to the parking lot, along the east side of the parking lot back to Mitchell Road. Then head north west up Bunker Road (hill) and towards the bunker and old gun placement at the top (this is almost 1 mile uphill with amazing views). From there the course is gradually downhill, staying on Bunker Road where the finish line meets the entrance to The Marine Mammal Center. Click here for the course map.

Start, Road Closures and Parking

Check-in and race day registration starts at 7.30am. Please arrive early so you can check-in (for online registrants) or register on the day, receive your race bib and enjoy the pre-race build-up.

The 4-mile race will start at 9.30am followed immediately by the 2-mile course participants. Please note that the roads involved in the race will close at 8.45am sharp. You will still be able to access the Marin Headlands through the tunnel but access to Bunker Road through to Rodeo Beach will be closed from 8.45am to finalize the race route. Please ensure you get parked and to the start
area with time to check-in or register and start at 9.30am.

Parking lots are located throughout the headlands and there is up to a 20 minute walk to the start at Rodeo Beach from the furthest parking lot.

Please note: This year’s race will be SELF-TIMED, so if you would like to know how fast you completed the run, please bring a stopwatch or you may look at our digital clock as you cross the finish line. (The cost savings made on professional timing expenses helps us feed many patients!)

After the Finish

Both routes finish on Bunker Road at the bottom of the entrance to The Marine Mammal Center. At the finish area you'll be able to collect your exclusive commemorative RFTS t-shirt. (Please note that t-shirts can ONLY be collected after the race - this speeds up check-in!).

Prizes will be presented to the first, second and third place finishers of the 4-mile race (male & female) and to children 12 years and under.

FUN DAY! After the event, all participants and supporters are invited to the Center for complimentary food, drinks and tours of the hospital and exhibits, with the opportunity to see our patients from the upper viewing area.

Please note: Due to health and safety reasons, dogs are not allowed in the Center, though there will be an area for dogs set up in the car park provided by Fetch! Pet Care of Marin. Service dogs are permitted on site but we highly recommend they are up to date with all inoculations. Please call (415) 289-7335 if you have any questions.
